What Is Full-Spectrum CBD?
If you’ve purchased CBD products in the past, you may have seen “full spectrum” on the label. With so many different types of labeling claims on today’s health and wellness products, it can be confusing to keep track of what it all means. But full spectrum is a good thing – learn more in this post on CBD health and wellness from Botanika Life.
What Is CBD, and Where Does It Come From?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, and it’s one of the many chemical compounds known as phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. You may be familiar with another phytocannabinoid, THC – short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical compound that produces a psychoactive effect. Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t have an impairing effect – you can’t get high from ingesting CBD. CBD and THC are just two of over 100 chemical compounds found in the powerful and complex cannabis plant.
How Does CBD Oil Work?
The highest concentration of CBD is generally found in the cannabis plant’s leaves and flowers. These plant parts are dried and processed to produce CBD extract. CBD oil is simply CBD extract suspended in oil – often coconut or hemp seed oil. It can be taken orally or topically – some people like to mix a few drops of CBD into their morning smoothie, while others use a CBD balm on their skin.
While research on the power of CBD is still in the early stages, CBD is generally used for several different purposes:
- Anxiety: Studies show that CBD may help to reduce feelings of anxiety. To help with stress relief, you can try taking a relaxing bath with a CBD-infused bath bomb.
- Pain: CBD is shown to reduce inflammation, helping to soothe muscle aches and joint pain. Try a muscle rub with CBD to melt away tension.
- Sleep: A good night’s sleep gives your body time to recover from the day and rest up for tomorrow. Try a CBD spray to support a healthy sleep cycle.
To get the most out of your wellness routine, make sure you’re choosing CBD products that are full spectrum.
What Does “Full Spectrum” Mean?
After cannabis plants are harvested and dried, they undergo processing to extract CBD. Oil that only includes cannabidiol is a CBD isolate. CBD oil that also includes all of the terpenes, cannabinoids, and chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant is labeled “full spectrum.” Full-spectrum CBD oil contains phytocannabinoids including:
- Cannabigerol (CBG)
- Cannabinol (CBN)
Full-spectrum oil will also include a miniscule amount of THC – a concentration of 0.3% or less, so it’s legal in the United States and won’t produce a psychoactive effect.
All of these chemical compounds work together to produce what’s called the entourage effect – they work more effectively together than when a single cannabinoid is isolated. Full-spectrum CBD oil also requires less processing, because all the compounds are kept together, rather than pulling out just the CBD extract.
