As CBD becomes more popular, the number of companies trying to capitalize off the trend continues to grow. Your health and wellness should be one of your highest priorities, but unfortunately, the same can’t always be said for product manufacturers. The result? You may put CBD of subpar quality into your body unless you do your due diligence.
So why does quality matter so much when it comes to CBD oils and other CBD-based products? Firstly, you won’t get the desired effects. More importantly, you may unknowingly ingest chemicals. You should be able to feel safe and empowered with the ingredients as listed, and confident that the manufacturer’s practices yield clean formulas.
From farming to the extraction to the additives, here is a guide to what you need to look for, in order to get the highest quality CBD.
Different Extraction Methods Result in Different Types of CBD
When gauging the quality of CBD, it’s important to first know that different extraction and processing practices yield different types of CBD oil. One is not objectively of a “higher quality” than others, but the resulting potency will vary.
Full Spectrum CBD is CBD oil that is extracted with other compounds from the plant. The terpenes that come with full spectrum CBD oil create an “entourage effect” that boosts the efficacy and potency of the CBD. This is the most powerful CBD because with the entourage effect you are likely to get the fullest effect of the CBD, especially when using a topical or taking it under the tongue.
Full Spectrum CBD will have trace amounts of THC (the ingredient that provides the intoxicating feeling). However, reputable full-spectrum CBD is forbidden from having any amount greater than 0.3%, meaning that it is not nearly enough to have any psychoactive impact.
Broad Spectrum CBD contains all of the chemicals in the plant, except for the THC. This type of CBD also yields good efficacy and potency, but it brings with it other compounds that aren’t always beneficial.
Isolate is a pure form of CBD. None of the beneficial terpenes and cannabinoids are included. None of the other plant chemicals are included. It is just CBD oil, but the downside to isolate is that it can have a diminished potency without the entourage effect of the other compounds.
Key Factors When Determining if a CBD Oil is of High Quality
If the farming practices include using pesticides or chemical-heavy fertilizers, it’s possible for toxic elements to be passed onto you when you consume the CBD. Certain extraction methods may also affect the purity of the CBD, so make sure you do some research on both before you make a purchase. While high-quality CBD can come from all over the world, CBD produced from USA-hemp is more likely to be grown with organic methods.
The CBD Carrier Oil
CBD needs a carrier oil to access the endocannabinoid system. The two most popular carrier oils are: hemp seed oil and coconut oil. Both of these are safe for human consumption, and hemp seed oil is derived from the same plant as the CBD. Coconut oil, which can also be named as MCT oil, is a common beneficial oil in many beauty, skin, and wellness products (just be sure that you do not have an allergy to the carrier oil being used in the CBD product you choose). Other safe-to-consume carrier oils include olive oil, avocado oil, and grapeseed oil.
If you want to buy a CBD oil that has a carrier oil not mentioned above, we suggest doing additional research to determine if it’s of a higher quality.
Lab Testing to Verify the CBD Quality and Cleanliness
Not only do you want to look for CBD that is lab tested, but it’s also preferable that the manufacturer or company use a third-party lab that is fully independent of the company and has built a reputation of reliability. A quality CBD oil should disclose within its lab results: the cannabinoid content and purity, included terpenes, and any heavy metals and pesticides present.

The Expiration Date
If you’re in the supermarket, you probably always check the expiration date of the food you buy, especially if it’s not a shelf-stable or non-perishable item. But how often do you check the expiration date on skincare or beauty products? With CBD, the expiration date is important if you want the efficacy and quality to be at their best. The date should be printed on the packaging or bottle, along with the manufacturer name and lot or batch number. If there is no expiration date, skip that particular product. Investors may want transparency on financial information, audits, or even prospective innovation, but for consumers, brand transparency is a little different. One of the most important parts of brand transparency for a consumer is the accessibility of the brand and the people who run the company or manufacturer. Is there a website, contact information, and/or mission statement easily available for those looking for more information? As a consumer, you may also be concerned about the public image of the company or manufacturer you wish to support with your dollars.

Some of our most popular products include:
If you’re looking for a versatile elixir for daily use, look no further than the Elite Elixir. Consisting of only two ingredients—full-spectrum CBD oil and a carrier oil of hemp seed—it can be used topically, sublingually, or infused into a drink. It targets inflammation, signs of aging, and skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, and acne. It’s basic, clean, and everything you need to start your CBD journey.
We designed the Sleep Spray formula to provide an optimal sleep experience from every angle. The THC-free broad-spectrum CBD oil is combined with melatonin, magnesium, and GABA.
Melatonin is a regulatory hormone that signals the brain when it is time to wind down for sleep. Magnesium is a mineral, a part of a larger enzyme system that does much of the work of providing balance to functions like protein synthesis, glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. Finally, GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps reduce stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Together, they keep your body in homeostasis, so you can achieve a restful and consistent sleep cycle.
Botanika Life’s Pain Relief Collection includes the Pain Relief Roller, the Super Soothing Pain Serum, and the Ultra-Relief Pain Rub. The goal of all three of these products is to provide almost immediate cessation of muscle and joint pain, whether it be from intense workouts, arthritis, or other mild to moderate injuries.
With other proven pain-relieving agents like lidocaine, menthol, and arnica included with the full spectrum CBD oil, these products are dedicated to stopping pain in its tracks.
Aside from the Elite Elixir, Botanika Life also offers these other elixirs: the Plant Stem Cell Elixir, and the Vitamin C Elixir. Both of these target aging, hydration, and general skin care. The CBD oil is partnered with other ingredients like apple stem cells, marula, Vitamin C, and squalane, all which boost hydration, moisturization, collagen, and elastin.
The result? Your skin will appear smoother, brighter, and healthier. And inside, these ingredients support the production of many anti-aging elements that can also prevent and reduce skin scarring such as stretch marks, fine lines, wrinkles, and cellulite.
